IXsystems Releases Upgraded TrueNAS 13.0 for High-Performance NAS Systems

In some exciting storage news, on the heels of Intel Vision 2022 announcements, IXsystems has a new and improved TrueNAS version. TrueNAS 13.0 is now available for NAS systems.

IXsystems TrueNAS 13.0 is Out Now!

The new release is an upgrade to the 2020 release of TrueNAS 12 Farewell FreeNAS (with an additional update, U8, in March.) The “release” status means it is suitable for a wider range of users, while the company recommends that business and mission-critical users wait until July or September 2022 to upgrade to the new operating system.

IXsystems TrueNAS 13.0 Release Cycle for May 2022

TrueNAS 13.0 brings some exciting upgrades including:

– An update to FreeBSD 13.0, which includes major updates to components and drivers. For example, the FreeBSD 13.0 networking updates have made it easier to use the Intel i225-V for firewalls.

– Version upgrades such as OpenZFS 2.0 and Samba 4.15 for improved performance, stability, and security.

– Enhancements to the iSCSI target and NFS server for even better performance.

– Several bug fixes and security updates have also been included.

Clearly, there are plenty of impressive new features in this release.

Final Thoughts

For now, TrueNAS (FreeBSD) remains the preferred operating system for many businesses and scale-up systems. However, IXsystems has made it clear that TrueNAS Scale is the future and has even mentioned the ability to transition to the new operating system while still using the FreeBSD version. Although many business users might prefer the stability of TrueNAS FreeBSD, over the next few years, we expect more and more users to switch to the Debian Linux based TrueNAS Scale. At Server The Home, we have already transitioned all of our instances to TrueNAS Scale and we encourage others to do the same. While we know many of our users are still using the FreeBSD version, we recommend waiting a few days before upgrading to a new release to ensure the smoothest transition possible.

They call me “the STH news guy” for a reason.
