TrueNAS CORE Upgrades to Debian, Joins Forces with SCALE for Unbeatable Performance

Attention all NAS users and FreeBSD enthusiasts, exciting changes are coming your way! In a bold move to elevate performance and streamline operations, TrueNAS CORE has officially announced its switch from FreeBSD to Debian for its popular NAS software.

But before you start panicking, let us assure you that this transition is nothing to fear. Thanks to the powerful OpenZFS file system, migrating to the new OS is a breeze…well, almost. While the transition may be a one-way street, users can still expect a seamless upgrade process.

That is, except for one small hiccup – the migration of VM appliances. Due to the use of FreeBSD jails in the current TrueNAS CORE, these will not be able to move along with your data to the new Debian-based software. Don’t worry though, the upcoming TrueNAS CORE 13.3 update will address this issue by incorporating KVM from the built-in Linux kernel.

Speaking of TrueNAS CORE 13.3, the last update for the FreeBSD version will include important fixes for ZFS and Samba to match the capabilities of the TrueNAS SCALE. But don’t worry, you still have some time before you need to start thinking about migration.

Looking for even more reasons to upgrade to TrueNAS CORE 13.3? The Register has compiled a list of exciting features that are in the works, along with a detailed timeline of when you can expect to see them implemented.
